I can’t outline for the life of me, but I do tend to dream up scenes I love — usually ones where emotions are high-strung — and work toward them. This sometimes means I don’t know where the story will go, or that I’ll head in the wrong direction, but it can always be tweaked later on. All that said, the bulk of the story was ‘written’ after it sold to my delightful (and insightful!) editor. We changed so much of the story, but what’s most fascinating is that it remains almost entirely the same. The characters are stronger, the history more cemented, the plot knotted tighter. And because I’m rarely happy with what I do, I kept fine-tuning the story during the various stages of editing. For me, the hardest part is letting go, and even now, knowing the book is out there, I still wish I could go back and edit quite a bit!Let us slide into your DMs.Sign up for theTeen Voguedaily emailWant more fromTeen Vogue?
