Protest is democratic. Protest is the clarion voice of the people. It is one of many political tools that individuals use to disrupt the existing state of affairs. It is one tactic among many others, like voting, writing to members of Congress, and talking with friends about politics. The reason why protest is so important is because it is often leveraged by those who are most vulnerable to the negative conditions of institutional racism and inequality when other methods have been insufficient in creating substantial and lasting social change. Essentially, protest is what happens when people who have long been oppressed care enough about everyone else to show them how to be better comrades.
