DHS had previously disclosed its findings that multiple states were subjected to hacking — likely by Russia — but waited approximately one year before telling the individual states; a decision which has come under fire. “It is completely unacceptable that it has taken DHS over a year to inform our office of Russian scanning of our systems, despite repeated requests for information,” California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a statement, as reported by the AP. Though the DHS didn’t publicly announce the list of states that were hacked, the AP contacted every state and received confirmations from Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.
