Bodegas are a staple of New York City life, especially for many immigrants. According to YAMA’s director of public relations, Youssef Mubarez, there are over 5,000 Yemeni-owned small businesses in New York City, and most of them are bodegas. It’s Arawiya’s equivalent of Arabic, but it’s an older, obsolete language which allowed me to either define words outright (thanks to dialect differences between characters) or via context.
