The one thing somebody had said to me was, "Well, we can't give felons, for example, the right to vote because they'll vote for things in their favor, like better prison food." [This] was not only a baffling and mind-blowingly ignorant example, but it also spoke to the ways and the lack of empathy in which we have the conversation on blatant voter disenfranchisement. For some reason, when we talk about ensuring that people have the right to vote, there's this automatic assumption made that somebody has done something to lose the right. And keep your personal skill sets in mind when you do this, too: If you’re good at graphic design, offer to create flyers for the org you decide to help.
