The language is almost always actual Arabic, except for a few rare instances in which I took some creative liberties. I knew from the start that language needed to be a part of it. Arabic is such a beautiful tongue, the rich and sometimes guttural sounds seemingly defined by the harsh atmosphere of the desert and its sweeping nights. It’s also a language made of countless dialects, which I drew upon in constructing the world. But as I was writing, my brain constantly picked at one chord: If the book is set in Arawiya, aren’t the characters already speaking Arawiyan? How could I choose to use English here and Arabic there? To combat this, I introduced a second tongue called Safaitic. It’s Arawiya’s equivalent of Arabic, but it’s an older, obsolete language which allowed me to either define words outright (thanks to dialect differences between characters) or via context. Of course, both tongues—Arawiyan and Safaitic—are Arabic here in the real world, but no one needs to know that!TV billeteras vans hombre I can’t outline for the life of me, but I do tend to dream up scenes I love — usually ones where emotions are high-strung — and work toward them. This sometimes means I don’t know where the story will go, or that I’ll head in the wrong direction, but it can always be tweaked later on. All that said, the bulk of the story was ‘written’ after it sold to my delightful (and insightful!) editor. We changed so much of the story, but what’s most fascinating is that it remains almost entirely the same. The characters are stronger, the history more cemented, the plot knotted tighter. And because I’m rarely happy with what I do, I kept fine-tuning the story during the various stages of editing. For me, the hardest part is letting go, and even now, knowing the book is out there, I still wish I could go back and edit quite a bit!Let us slide into your DMs.Sign up for theTeen Voguedaily emailWant more fromTeen Vogue?
