Episode six is named after a ballroom classic called Love is the Message, which is a 13-minute mix. It’s really about Pray Tell, Billy Porter’s character, and him not being able to stop playing the song. He’s dealing with the possible loss of this love in his life, and having to deal with loss over and over again as a black queer man in 1980s New York City who’s of a certain age and who, as we know from episode 4, has been diagnosed with HIV. And, of course, there’s also the meeting of Patty and Angel. We see Patty’s journey of discovery that, not only is her husband having an affair with another woman, but a younger woman, a Puerto-Rican woman, a sex worker, and also a “transsexual.” pull homme stylé A big thing for me was that we have to talk about race on the show. These are not just trans characters: All of the girls on our show are black girls — some of them have intersections of being Latina or Hispanic — but they’re all black girls. The ballroom is a black and brown space before it’s a trans and queer space. So you can’t just say we have this great trans and queer show, you have to add in the layer of the race stuff. Those are conversations that I don’t think were as sharp and as centered until I stepped into the room and Steven had a co-conspirator. The conversation shifted because the room was balanced a little bit more. I had to be very clear that a white trans girl’s experience is very different than a black trans girl’s experience — especially a black trans girl that’s struggling with economic resources in 1980s New York City. So we gave Elektra more pointed lines about whiteness, or Angel started calling Stan a white suburban boy. A conservative might argue for low taxes, less government regulation on business, and to let the market do its work, for example. The first day on set we were shooting the opening number “Rotten to the Core.” My mom flew in and I remember having the biggest case of butterflies in my stomach, but it was magical. As much as the movie is a fairy tale, even shooting it felt like a fairy tale.
