A monument to the "Unknown Alabama Confederate Soldiers" was unveiled on Sunday at Confederate Veterans Memorial Park, a swath of privately-owned land. David Coggins, the owner and developer of the land, said the unveiling had been planned for months, and the monument was ordered last year — well before the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee brought together white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month. Coggins, however, said the monument to the Confederacy has nothing to do with race.
