Like the New Deal, its 1930s predecessor, the Green New Deal (GND) aims to build millions of jobs through projects for the public good. Unlike its predecessor, it draws on ideas that have long been central to the communities fighting for labor, environmental, and climate justice. “Before there was a Green New Deal, there was a just transition,” explained Elizabeth Yeampierre, steering committee cochair of the Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) and the executive director of UPROSE, a grassroots climate justice organization. “A just transition is a move away from an extractive economy to an economy that is going to help us survive the impacts of climate change.” Daniela ran into issues again several years later when life circumstances forced her to dive back into domestic work, just two weeks after the birth of her daughter. “Because of what was happening I couldn’t breastfeed my child,” she said, explaining that she had to get four different jobs just to make ends meet. “I didn’t get the chance to enjoy my child. So yes, I was a hard worker. I was working almost 24 hours a day, working from 6 A.M. to 11 P.M., Monday to Sunday. I would hardly get hours off because I would go home and take care of my baby too.”
