The black part of it is very important to me. It's not something I like to talk about overtly very much, but it's a big part of it. I want it to feel rooted in the place that I grew up in. Even the album cover, I didn't want a picture of my face because of all the things that come with being a woman musician, but I wanted people to know that I was femme and I wanted people to know that I was black.
