My own experience as a Black woman in journalism has demonstrated why this question is so important. In many newsrooms, marginalized voices aren’t just expected to be good reporters; we’re also expected to speak for entire communities and to educate our colleagues on the issues we face. I’ve been a minority in newsrooms where I was constantly made to feel like I was difficult when I advocated for myself.
