Last July, I learned about California Proposition 25, which would have Forty percent of Black girls surveyed agreed with the statement, “If I were to speak out or disagree with a teacher, I would be more likely to get in trouble than a girl of a different race.” As the study authors note, this dovetails with the findings of recent reports from other organizations like Black Girls Matter and Girlhood Interrupted that found Black girls are often viewed as “‘loud,’ ‘aggressive,’ or ‘angry’ when advocating for their needs or speaking out against experiences of discrimination, bias, or inequity” in school. Eighty percent of Black girls and 63% of Latinx girls said that having a role model in their lives who came from their same racial or ethnic background was important for them.
