Instead, I’m inspired to keep youth away from gangs if they ever feel alone or like their only choice is to join a gang to feel accepted. As a Native teenager, I believe it’s my mission to take care of my Native youth, no matter what tribe, as well as kids who aren't Native. I want to be an example of other ways of life that don’t involve gangs, stealing, and robbing. For me, personally, that includes my drum group (known simply in our community as a “drum,” which I started with other Native youth my age in 2014. Our drum is called Shki Bmaadzi, which is Anishinaabemowin for “new beginnings,” and it has helped me find a path that feels right. We drum, we sing, and we have fun. And when I meet other youth, I invite them to drum with us. Keep in mind that early voting in a tricky way to look at an election: none of this data shows us if these voters would have voted anyway on Election Day but decided to do it sooner, or if they represent completely new voters.
