We got a ton of donations in advance for water bottles and first aid and all of that, and then we have the legal team on our side with Black Lives Matter Nashville. I can see why it's tempting to say that we now live in a post-Islamophobic society, but we don’t. Muslims, and Muslim women especially, are still under attack. Muslim women are forced to choose between their safety and their faith when there is no reason that the two should be mutually exclusive. How can we claim to live in a country that practices freedom of religionif the hijab still makes our women targets Omar and Tlaib shatter stereotypes about Muslim women in the best ways I could have hoped. They tell the United States something that I, and so many other American Muslim women who look like me, have been trying to tell our peers for years: Yes, Black Muslim women exist, and no, not all Muslim women wear the hijab; but if we do wear the hijab, that’s valid. We are not all the same and we can speak for ourselves. Muslim Women’s Day is the best incarnation of this.
