Like [activist] DeRay McKesson says, “You’re not born woke”; it’s such a learning process. I started thinking about the feminism I was initially being sold, which was basically that boys and girls should be equal. But there are intersections, and a lot of reasons why it is easier for me to achieve that equality than it is for some of my friends. You have to always question your politics: Am I being as inclusive as I possibly can? Is this thing that I said, could it be xenophobic? My worst fear is someone writing, “Rowan Blanchard, queen of feminism!” I’m like no. I am figuring this out just as much as you are. I am constantly trying to check my privilege. I sometimes get worried that my feminism is, like, too American. We can get lost in Taylor Swift fighting Kanye West instead of being like, there are so many Syrian refugees!Photo: Sean ThomasY+R ON THE FUTURERB: platinum tint retro 11 One of the priorities of the council is to fight race-based mascots and combat the negative stereotypes they perpetuate. Living in Chicago, we are constantly bombarded with the Blackhawks logo, which represents the city’s professional ice hockey team. There are many multiracial Natives like myself who don't look like a stereotype, and because of this, our Native identities are often questioned or dismissed entirely. This experience erases a whole part of us and mentally breaks us down. At school, my fellow council members and I are usually the only Native kids in class, and it’s hard to find a safe space for Native youth. We decided that as a council, we would teach each other about the land we live on and the medicine and food that are still available to us. This makes us feel like we are not alone, because the land and plants are our relatives, and we are surrounded by them.
