We place so much importance on beauty for women and there’s this real fallacy that most of us buy into that the more beautiful you are, the happier you are. We somehow correlate worthiness with beauty, I think, particularly for girls and young women. Emma is a really intelligent girl, but thanks to her parents' pride in her attractiveness and the social currency that it affords her, she places so much importance in how she looks because that’s what she’s been taught to do. And I think that’s what a lot of young women have been taught to do.
