Her wardrobe isn’t perfect. She’s stubborn and gets bad grades. Her father has been missing for years and her classmates mock her optimism for his eventual return. Meg has a lot to be mad about, and she is. This anger, though, seems less reactionary than existential; under Ava’s governance, the context of Meg’s rage is reframed. Unable to perform social pleasantness, Meg becomes the angry, unsatisfied Black girl hero who eventually learns to command space, time, and her own destiny.
