“It has been ingrained [into the minds of people in the Academy] that men do this work better. This industry is fueled by word of mouth and who works with whom, and we need to break out of that,” Charmaine says. “ We need be willing to take chances on new talent … If a director came to any VFX company asking for a female supervisor, and that company couldn’t provide that, it would be embarrassing for the company. We should be able to provide [these opportunities] for people, whether it’s women, or people of color, or LGBT folks.
