We must look at incarceration as a violent, cruel way to treat people and completely change how we approach criminal justice. The way that the U.S. incarceration system is structured has little accountability toward those who are imprisoned, particularly during moments of crisis. For the time being, we should prioritize supplying prisons and prisoners with the basic hygiene requirements they need to curb the spread of the virus and releasing all nonviolent inmates, including those in ICE facilities, who pose no immediate threat to others but whose lives are now at risk. as the pandemic continues to escalate.
