Destigmatizing mental illness is a core ethic of mine and of the novel, but not in any way I had to force. I think stigma, misunderstanding, and breakdown of empathy happens when we define people by their diagnosis….Outsiders might see Eric only as “a schizophrenic,” or “a suicide.” Not only does that reduction miss so much of a person’s story, it isolates the loved ones who see them more fully. What I think is relatable about Cady, and what was probably me working out my own issue that I’m still working on, is the issue of control. She must forgive herself for failing to control her brother.
