At an early age, I heard the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I first heard of Dr. King when I was 15 years old. I heard of Rosa Parks the same time and met Rosa Parks at the age of 17; at the age of 18, I met Dr. King. I started to study the way of peace, the way of love, studying the philosophy and the discipline of nonviolence, studying the role of civil disobedience, studying the teaching of Gandhi. I was a student in Nashville, and I came under the influence of a young minister by the name of James Lawson who, for an entire school year, taught us the philosophy and discipline of nonviolence. So I accepted the philosophy and discipline of nonviolence as a way of life, as a way of living. When someone would beat us, or pour hot water, hot coffee, or hot chocolate on us, or spit on us, try to fumigate us in a restaurant, you just took it. I never had any idea or thought of striking back. And on the freedom rides, on the march from Selma to Montgomery on that bridge, I was prepared to die for what I believed in.
