I remember this one day. I came home, and I think it was in third grade, and I said, "Some boy touched my hair today and he said that it was weird." My mom told me that the next time somebody touched my hair that I'd have to go to the principal's office. If she hadn't told me that, I wouldn't have done that. That really was the point at which I started to stand up for myself. It still happened, and I'll explain to people why it's wrong, even though it's not my place to explain to them because it shouldn't... that should have been a given that they knew that you don't touch other people's hair, because it's dehumanizing. But it's... that's the best thing that I've learned so far. The other songs are more about how it's difficult in relationships to communicate. Usually writing a song about it is when I can actually say things. It's in retrospect. You know? You always come up with a comeback after you're gone. The whole thing is revolving around "Heavy Heart," even though that's the slowest ballad song.
