When I was a fairly little kid, like between six and nine years old, my parents gave me a tape recorder for my birthday or Christmas. That experience of being able to record myself and play it back and create things was definitely a huge coming of age experience. I think too, hearing Jimi Hendrix for the first time was a really huge thing for me. I was an early teen and there was something about that music that touched on some very deep territory. I was a little bit older like 14 and heard Acid House for the first time and I ran over to my cousin’s house and I was like "We have to figure out how to make this music." I think the first concert I ever went to, I saw Siouxsie and the Banshees and that totally blew me away.Instagram contentView on InstagramTVHow would you describe your music now?GRR: birkenstock black clogs "I started playing music when I was really young, on the violin. I had actually taken piano lessons before that and hated it, which is funny ’cause that’s my main gig right now. Whenever my dad would drive me to violin lessons we’d listen to either classic musical or classic rock. It was a lot of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Stones—all of my dad’s favorite bands—or like Tchaikovsky. And when I started listening to music on my own, I got really into what I call, ’The Golden Age of Country,’ really anything before 1970. I’m also really big jazz fan. But my all-time favorite singer, definitely the biggest influence on me, is Sam Cooke. He has such an effortless vocal ability, it’s like he could sing while he was sleeping. The way he sang, that always stuck with me. When I got into school it let me explore different instruments and got me back into keys because we had to take classes in it. Really whatever I could get my hands on, I just like creating. I was in a band with friends from school, we were called Noble Hunter, and I was writing some songs for myself, and it was evident that they just wasn’t right for the band. It just happened pretty organically."WHAT MAKES YOU WORTH LISTENING TO: birkenstock black clogs What advice do you have for emerging trans artists?GRR: birkenstock black clogs teamed up with the Economic Security Project (ESP) to create a new fellowship position for a reporter to cover the nexus of racial, gender, and economic justice. The yearlong role, funded by ESP, will be split between the politics and identity verticals, and take an intersectional look at what the economic fallout of COVID-19 looks like for young people. birkenstock black clogs
