It’s not easy being the first, and it’s not easy to make space for yourself to exist and thrive when everyone around you wants you to conform. But Nicole Crentsil, the CEO of the U.K.’s first festival celebrating Black women, girls, and non-binary people, has done both. Healthy friendships. I think that was like something I didn't always have, especially when I first moved here to L.A.TER: Theyâre all very different. Is there a reason that you think itâs important that young women see themselves reflected on screen like that in so many diverse ways?CM: Oh, the first time I hung out with them. I realized, "Oh, these girls can f*cking skateboard." It was something I didnât even realize until a few weeks ago and I reflected back at meeting them, just thinking, âThese girls are really cute, I love it, I love how theyâre trying to do this." But theyâre doing it. Theyâve been doing it for years. They have YouTube videos. They own it. And theyâre not mean girls. I think that the whole mean girl thing is set up because thereâs not that much space for girls, so they fight each other to get into that space.TV
