I’ll back up. I’m 18 years old; it was mere days before my birthday when I got shot. I am Native American: Santee Sioux from Niobrara, Nebraska, and Blackfeet from Browning, Montana. I was born and raised in a diverse neighborhood called Albany Park in Chicago. In my neighborhood, shootings are normal and happen often. Despite that, though, I regularly saw kids with knives, brass knuckles, and guns on campus. And even though I avoided joining or involving myself with any gang, I often found myself a target. People regularly associated me with one gang simply because of the grade school I went to and the friends I grew up with. And members of the opposing gang would bully me and beat me up because of it. And I knew that wasn’t the worst that could happen: If they felt like shooting me, they would. On the flip side, my friends who were part of the gang most closely affiliated with my elementary school were constantly asking me when I was going to turn out, when I was going to “come home” and join them. And the members of their gang who weren’t my friends assumed my reluctance to join meant I was working against them. Essentially, there was danger coming from every direction. I had a friend who lived a few neighborhoods over and was going through the same thing.
