Once you dig deeper, it’s clear that individual doctors like Van Meter andZucker it’s time for everyone else, especially white Americans, to step up and be heroic. It’s time to call out racism when it happens. It’s time to make phone calls to local officials about issues facing marginalized communities. It’s time to stop riding the efforts of “the squad,” calling these women your “spirit animal,” or ending your political activism at a snarky quote on Twitter. But ACPeds is only one of the the largest and most vocal of a network of organizations who rely on credentialing to oppose trans-affirming care. Among them are the Gender Care Consumer Advocacy Network, ReThink Identity Medicine and Ethics, the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine, Gender Health Query, and the Pediatric and Adolescent Gender Dysphoria Working Group. Looking at these names, one could easily assume there was a strong medical argument against trans-affirming care for youth, or even potentially a discussion worth having. But let me repeat:There isno Citizen Four is still working on how they want to sound and come off: what do they want their image to be? How can they break the boy band mold enough to be interesting? In 2017, fans want authentic diversity, so a smart next step for them would be to emphasize what makes them unique as a group in a sea of harmonizing heartthrob hopefuls.
