For me, so much of that process was being confused because from the time that I was a little kid — from before I can remember I felt comfortable identifying as female. Coming from an academic family and somewhat hippie family, I think there was some tolerance of that that other people may not have experienced but there was no context for it. It was simply a thing of "Oh that's what my kid’s like" but there was certainly not an idea of "Oh my kid’s trans." Like that wasn't there at all, I was born in 1974, it’s not my parent's fault. What my experience was mostly, was trying to navigate through life and make sense of that, of the fact that I was more comfortable identifying as female. As I got older that became more and more difficult because it’s one thing to be like "That's what my kid is like" but it was a different thing to be "Oh that’s what my 22-year-old who just graduated from college is like." I remember my mom being very confused why I was moving to New York with a suitcase full of women’s clothes and I’ve shared about it before but I have a history with addiction and it's pretty clear to me that that interacted with my denial around my trans identity. I'm really all about pushing myself.” genius tuned 2021 I think that definitely connects back to me hearing Hendrix for the first time because I had that experience of hearing that music for the first time and it really touching something deep inside me, and then when I started to talk, to other people who were into music, about it I kind of quickly understood that what it touched if me was different than what it touched in them. And what was getting touched in me was that something about the way that that music unfolded and told its story, made me feel very at peace with myself. When I was in the sort-of world that that music created, I felt ok about who I was and who I was made sense. And I think that if I was to analyze that, I think that to some degree that Jimi Hendrix's music has a very high degree of abstraction because of its use of really complex timbral compositional devices, and you know a number of other things. So that in that plain of abstraction that that music created I was able to experience fluidity around gender that was more consistent with what my experience was. I definitely think that that's a big part of the music that I’ve created is to try to use sound as a way of creating a landscape. And so making music I think, for me was a way to stay in that landscape. So when I started to take music more seriously what became meaningful for me was to create that for other people… a sonic landscape in which whatever was going on for somebody could be given space and room and a place to unpack itself, and be itself.TV genius tuned 2021
