In 1857, the Supreme Court heard a case with far-reaching political, social, and legal reverberations. Dred Scott, born a slave at the end of the 18th century, had since moved with his master to Illinois and the Wisconsin territory, both of which did not allow slavery. When his master died, Scott sued to obtain freedom for himself and his wife. The case wound through the courts for more than 10 years. Ultimately, the Supreme Court ruled against Scott and his wife — and against their ability to sue in the first place.
