When I went to a meeting of my local hub of the Sunrise Movement in Santa Barbara, though, everyone I met was friendly and welcoming. We started the meeting by going around in a circle and talking about why we were there. Lots of people said it was because they loved the beautiful places where they’d grown up. Others described how climate disasters had personally impacted them. The tone of the conversation was warm and respectful throughout, and there was an overall sense of appreciation for everyone having taken the time to be there. schwinn roxie Another surprise for me was that there’s many different kinds of activism that can coexist within one organization. As a shy, introverted person, I’m uncomfortable going door to door canvassing or talking to strangers on the phone. Luckily, the Sunrise Movement has a variety of subgroups, including one for activist art. I love drawing and photography, but haven’t made time for it in years, so it was a perfect fit. schwinn roxie “In a lot of ways, climate activism gives me a support group, and that’s not something I’m used to.”2.
