The memorial was the first piece of the state tourism office’s 2011 Freedom Trail project and honors Emmett Till, a 14-year-old boy who was kidnapped and lynched in August 1955, after Carolyn Bryant, a white store owner, accused him of whistling at her. Till’s killers, half-brothers Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, were subsequently acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury in September of the same year. This is not the first time a monument to Till’s memory has been defaced: Other Till markers in the state have been reported as vandalized, including one with gunshot holes.
