Growing up, in many ways I was the representation for myself. Some of my childhood modeling jobs were with Mattel and Disney, so I’d go into the Disney store and literally see me. My family was cleaning up the garage, and I found these life-size cutouts of 6-year-old me as the black Tinkerbell, black Cinderella, you name it, which is hilarious. But being the black version of so many characters brought up problems. I was happy to be black, but at the same time there were moments of, “Why is this a separate collection?” There was this realization that being black meant I was the “off-brand” version because Cinderella wasn’t made to look like me.RB: 3h cycling ) “I never really saw my career taking that route,” he says. “But the universe was like, ‘you’re going to do this.’” 3h cycling For all the comparisons that have been made and will continue to be made to her chief predecessors Taylor and Lorde, Olivia is already proving herself to be on a stylistically different track. She doesnât traffic in broken fairytales like the former or vivid suburban metaphor like the latter â musically and lyrically, sheâs drawn to frankness, laying down the cards all at once. Her voice is effortless, the clear result of years of vocal training plus natural talent that makes her soar where many singers have to strive. Thinking back to those musiciansâ debut albums, both of which are genius in their own right, thereâs a pattern of wisdom, an old soul type of teenage transcendence. They positioned themselves as outsider bards, taking covert notes in diaries as they eyed their classmates and the world around them. âBut I know itâs not forever,â Lorde slices through a tennis court fantasy. âTake me back when our world was one block wide,â Taylor reminisces on a perspective that was once so small, the implication being that sheâs all grown up now. Oliviaâs perspective, by contrast, feels more present, more minute-to-minute. The immediacy of the gut punches plucks something from you as you listen, some kind of urge to suck in your stomach and wail. âGod, itâs brutal out here,â with its ties to both Oliviaâs own brutal lyricism, is a line so perfect and well-delivered itâs almost difficult to listen to. (To be clear, that has not stopped me.) 3h cycling for the first time in college shook my worldview completely. I grew up in San Antonio and my momâs family lived all throughout South Texas. We lived not far from where Anzaldúa, a poet, feminist theorist, and writer, grew up. Though my family is Anglo and Anzaldúa isChicana 3h cycling
