All of my ball scenes are, for the first time, all-male categories. It was important to me that trans men were not erased, but also, [trans people] weren’t necessarily centered back then, and the category naming in the 1980s was not very 2018-sensitive... it’d be “male impersonator” or something like that. So I decided we wouldn’t announce the category for the first time, we’ll just let them walk as body categories.
