We place so much importance on beauty for women and thereâs this real fallacy that most of us buy into that the more beautiful you are, the happier you are. We somehow correlate worthiness with beauty, I think, particularly for girls and young women. Emma is a really intelligent girl, but thanks to her parents' pride in her attractiveness and the social currency that it affords her, she places so much importance in how she looks because thatâs what sheâs been taught to do. What I really wanted was for the reader to almost be conflicted in blaming Emma, even for a split second, because we all have these attitudes so deeply ingrained within us because weâve been fed this narrative by the media and by our culture that women need to take preventative measures to avoid being raped, and if they donât take those measures, that somehow being sexually assaulted is their fault. Thatâs so deeply ingrained that I wanted the readers to have that moment where they, alongside Emmaâs friends and neighbors and community, are almost asking themselves, "Well, what was she expecting?Was mtb shades
