At the first high school I attended, security guards made us walk through metal detectors and then they used wands on us and patted us down, all as part of the process of entering the school. Despite that, though, I regularly saw kids with knives, brass knuckles, and guns on campus. And even though I avoided joining or involving myself with any gang, I often found myself a target. People regularly associated me with one gang simply because of the grade school I went to and the friends I grew up with. And members of the opposing gang would bully me and beat me up because of it. And I knew that wasn’t the worst that could happen: If they felt like shooting me, they would. On the flip side, my friends who were part of the gang most closely affiliated with my elementary school were constantly asking me when I was going to turn out, when I was going to “come home” and join them. And the members of their gang who weren’t my friends assumed my reluctance to join meant I was working against them. Essentially, there was danger coming from every direction. I had a friend who lived a few neighborhoods over and was going through the same thing. People always walk around scared, like they could get shot at any minute because of the gangs, but I didn’t want to feed that fear. full suspension bike gumtree After two years, I transferred out of my first high school. Finding a better fit was a bit of trial and error. I tried a boarding school before ultimately landing at an alternative school in Chicago that would give me the chance to graduate with an actual high school diploma (versus a GED, as was the case with the other options). By December 2017, I was settled into my new routine, passing all my classes, and focusing on my path to graduation. By that same point, the friends I grew up with who had turned to gangs had either died, got shot, were in jail, or were homeless.
