Zafira first appeared on the page for a subconscious reason that, until recently, I didn’t fully understand. When I started off as a blogger, in 2010, I built a following with my real name and my blog’s logo, rather than a photo of myself. It was fine at first, but as the days became months and eventually years, I became increasingly aware that no one knew what I looked like. My moment of truth came when BookExpo America invited me to teach a panel on design and requested a headshot. It was such a simple ask, but it felt like life and death: a turning point in which I knew everything could come crashing down. In that moment, I was Zafira, afraid of being shunned, my every action derided because of preconceived notions placed by society. That was the basis of Zafira’s caliphate's misconceptions, but of course, there’s more to it than that.
