Kate and I will still watch the Oscars tonight, but we’ll know that some strong contenders were left out, and probably more were never made. That’s just where Hollywood is right now. And because visibility is so vital to acceptance, the lack of visibility means that a lot of people will still view LGBT people as outsiders, or others. I hope that one day, there will be a popular show or a love story in a film that stars a lesbian couple with a scene just like my first date with Kate — and viewers will watch it, rooting for people like me to have our happily ever after.
