In many newsrooms, marginalized voices aren’t just expected to be good reporters; we’re also expected to speak for entire communities and to educate our colleagues on the issues we face. I’ve been a minority in newsrooms where I was constantly made to feel like I was difficult when I advocated for myself. I’ve seen situations where reporters of color were required to respond tactfully and diplomatically to frequently racist and hateful comments, the mandate leaving them to feel as though editors didn’t account for the emotional toll this would take on them. I’ve even been literally tokenized in staff photo shoots: the only person of color asked to sit in on an all-white picture of more senior staff. 2019 fuel ex 8 There is a cyclical feedback loop of journalists of color feeling unwelcome in newsrooms even as we try to advance in order to change these cultures.
