What's really interesting about being in this position in the African diaspora is that I think blackness in the United States is viewed in a nuanced way. If I'm just walking down the street, I’m thinking about how I'm rooted in the American experience. There's an impression that people have when they hear my last name. It’s very East-African, so there is a level of feeling like having two feet in both worlds. I grew up with that understanding. My parents would say that when you enter this house, it wasn't a super Americanized experience. But my environment was very suburban and I went to predominantly white schools. I think my interests, especially in African-American stories and black African stories, is bridging those worlds and making that connection because I think our histories are really interconnected.
