August 14 seemed like a normal, fun Monday night. I had just left a friend's going away party. I live two hours away from where the event was held in New York City, so it was well after midnight when I took the long train ride back home. At the time it just hurt so much. He was just such a toxic person, and I didn't realize it at the time, because I really loved him. That song is about how sometimes you try to do something wild ... and out of the ordinary, as like a fun, last ditch effort to resuscitate a relationship. And it turns out just being the most sad, empty feeling that makes you realize all the more that it's not meant to be. I left this person many years ago, and realized just how emotionally abusive he was to me and how much he really kept me back from pursuing my own voice. It's just really amazing to release a song like that and feel like I've had my own artistic success at this point, that's going to conquer his someday.
