The agreement’s shortcomings are a direct result of COP’s inclusion of major polluters in their process. Fossil fuel companies have been at the forefront of COP since its inception. The International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), for example,sent more delegates an international coalition that fights in the interests of frontline communities who are suffering the most from climate change, not the oil executives profiting off of it. Moving forward as a movement, it is imperative that we band together and join coalitions like Polluters Out in order to oust fossil fuel companies from spheres of influence and completely alter the way decisions are made — forming solutions that center people, not markets.
