Monica grew up in what she described as âthe tradition before we were calling it social justice.â She carried those beliefs and ideals with her into her time in IDOC, talking with other incarcerated women about abolition, and then participating in MUAVIâs yearly casco africa twin I left Puerto Rico in January to study as a visiting student at Trinity College in Hartford. After the hurricane, working towards my master’s degree in Puerto Rico was a challenge because the electricity and internet were not reliable. Coupled with the economic crisis that Puerto Rico is facing, living on the island seemed impossible. casco africa twin Anti-apartheid activists found ways to draw out those threads. One activist who opposed bank loans to South Africa, Prexy Nesbitt, emphasized the “need to build on contradictions inherent in banking (redlining, racist hiring within banks) and see the full impact of banks on all aspects of American life. The BLC [Bank Loan Campaign] should be part of a more general analysis of social contradictions in our society as a whole.” These kinds of critiques drew people in.
