“My mom grew up under the Apartheid regime in South Africa, so the protests after the death of George Floyd have been a moment of clarity for me as a delegate to take action…. We now have the power to make the future anti-racist, so this coalition would be a generational way to turn the page by proposing solutions for the 400-year history of oppression in America, whether that be reparations or defunding and restructuring the police…. When we push for politicians to work for us, and really show up to get our demands heard, we’re voting for something, and that motivator will always be more powerful than the lesser-of-two-evils system we have now. But unless we inject our opinions and our demands into these places of power and force them to listen, young people will always be the generation that gets nothing because it’s taken for granted that we’re not going to vote.”LyLena D.
