I’ve been a minority in newsrooms where I was constantly made to feel like I was difficult when I advocated for myself. I’ve seen situations where reporters of color were required to respond tactfully and diplomatically to frequently racist and hateful comments, the mandate leaving them to feel as though editors didn’t account for the emotional toll this would take on them.
