A plethora of important moments related to the struggle for Black freedom occurred in August: the beginning ofthe Haitian Revolutionin 1791, the 2014Ferguson uprisingthelanding of enslaved Africans copa 20.1 The stress and roadblocks Adelyn has faced to try and obtain the same rights afforded to her classmates is unique, even among adults. Yet, while describing her past, pain and ambitions in the words of someone far older, she, displayed at the same time a youthful innocence one would expect from a typical teenage girl. copa 20.1 “In the short-term future, I hope that all of the organizers who helped make this victory happen can let themselves be happy and celebrate. It’s important to hold Biden and Harris accountable, but these people deserve celebration and joy. I also hope that Democrats ultimately take control of the Senate so that we can really get things done. In an ideal Biden presidency for me, we could get the coronavirus under control and I could spend time with family and friends again. People would think twice before calling me slurs and deciding that racism and hatred are okay. We would be more sustainable and begin to care for our environment. And above all, people would be happy again. People will love their neighbors and cheer and dance in the streets again, just as they did when Biden’s victory was announced.” —Lena copa 20.1 For Adelyn and other trans students, the trauma goes beyond debates in the state capital over bills that put their basic rights risk. Over her time in school, she’s been kept out of girls’ locker rooms and bathrooms. When she was in sixth grade, she was told she could not take physical education, and school staff shifted her to a dance class — Adelyn wore her dance leggings under her clothes to avoid the locker room. School personnel eventually relented, and removed these restrictions, but unlike most other students, Adelyn has been denied or steered away from her right to play at any level by Texas law. copa 20.1
