Growing up, her parents played the classics—The Beatles, Elvis, Sinatra—but it was when she first heard Amy Winehouse that she truly fell in love. She picked up a guitar at the age of ten and learned to play music, but kept it mostly to herself. It wasn’t until high school that she began playing for others, eventually posting covers of songs to YouTube. One of these, a stripped-down rendition of The Neighborhood’s "Sweater Weather," happened to get noticed by the daughter of a music ecutive, who showed it to her father, EP Entertainment label founder Tony Perez. He was impressed with Alessia’s emotive voice that belied her youth, and offered to get her into a studio to write and record. She spent afternoons recording demos throughout her senior year, and convinced her parents to let her put college on hold so that she could continue working on music. With the support of Def Jam talent-scout Tab Nkhereanye, she was signed to Def Jam just a month after graduating, and less than a year later, she’s released her first single. "Here" is a powerful outsider’s anthem that has immediately connected with listeners, and in just a few short weeks, been streamed over a million times. adidas derupt ! Happy haunting, folks!
